How Our Design Process Works
At Sherlock Landscaping, design isn’t just a one-off plan. It’s a conversation, guided by experience — and sometimes supported with hand-drawn sketches to help you visualise ideas before the first post goes in.
We start with a design consultation at your place, walking the space together and shaping a concept that fits your lifestyle. As the project takes shape, we keep things flexible, refining ideas so the final result feels natural, cohesive, and made for the way you live.
1. On-Site Design Consultation
We begin on site, exploring how you use your space, what’s working, and what could be improved.
This first step is all about understanding your lifestyle and how your home connects to the outdoors. Together, we discuss layout options, materials, and the key features that matter most — from sunny decks and paved patios to fences, pathways, and planting zones.
2. Concept & Project Outline
After our consultation, we create a clear concept and outline how the project could come together.
You’ll have a strong sense of direction, including layout, materials, and an indicative budget range.
We’ll help you choose finishes that last — hardwood decking, concrete patios, pergolas, timber fencing and retaining walls that add structure and value.
Prefer a low-maintenance space? We can integrate artificial grass for a clean, year-round look that complements the design.
3. Build & Evolve
We stay involved, refining and adjusting as needed so everything fits perfectly and feels effortless. We work on a transparent charge-up basis, with regular invoicing, so you only pay for the time and materials used to bring your vision to life.

Landscape Design Nelson — Why Choose Sherlock Landscaping
Every landscape design we create is unique — built around your lifestyle, your property, and your budget.
Because we’re locals, we understand the soils, slopes, and coastal weather patterns that shape outdoor spaces across Nelson and Tasman.
Based in Richmond, our design work takes us from coastal gardens in Māpua and Ruby Bay to larger lifestyle blocks around Brightwater and Wakefield. Each site brings its own character, and we love designing spaces that celebrate local materials, native planting, and the natural light that defines our region.
We believe great landscape design starts with listening — understanding how you live, how you move through your space, and what you want it to feel like. Our approach is about balance: creating gardens that flow naturally from home to outdoors, blending structure with softness, and crafting spaces that grow better with time.
With one team handling both design and construction, you’ll enjoy a seamless process from first conversation to final planting — landscapes that look great, work beautifully, and feel like home.

Landscape Design Nelson – FAQs
Do you provide design drawings?
We don’t create formal architectural plans — but we can provide hand-drawn sketches where helpful to visualise layout and flow before construction begins.
Can you include decks, patios, and fences in the design?
Yes, absolutely. Most of our projects feature structural elements like decking, patios, fencing, pergolas, and retaining walls — designed and built by our team for a cohesive result.
Do you install artificial grass?
Yes. Artificial grass is a popular option for low-maintenance outdoor areas, and we can incorporate it seamlessly into your overall design.
Do you handle construction as well as design?
Yes — we manage the full process, from concept to completion.
If your garden needs clearing first, our Garden “Huck Out” service can reset your space before the build begins.
Do I need council consent for my project?
If your deck or retaining wall exceeds local height limits (typically 1.5 m), consent may be required. We’ll let you know and recommend a pathway forward.
How does pricing work?
We operate on a charge-up basis, providing estimates up front and keeping you updated throughout, with regular invoicing. You’ll always know what’s happening and what you’re paying for.
